Fall Protection

February 10, 2011 - 8:00 am

In the construction industry in the US, falls are the leading cause of worker fatalities.  Each year, on average, between 150 and 200 workers are killed and more than 100,000 are injures as a result of falls at construction sites.  OSHA recognizes that accidents involving falls are generally complex events frequently involving a variety of factors.  Consequently, the standard for fall protection deals with both the human and equipment-related issues in protecting workers from fall  hazards.

This course is a brief but comprehensive overview of fall protection in construction. It covers the employer's duties to provide the correct type of fall protection or fall arrest equipment for employees. The course looks at the OSHA Standards and the proper practices for the installation and use of fall protection on the job. The fundamentals of personal fall-arrest systems, roof systems, anchorage, lanyards, horizontal lifelines, self-retracting lifelines and many other systems are reviewed. Safe practices prior to beginning a job are stressed as well as "competent person" issues, in performing safety checks for those persons working at heights.
